*It’s Family Time*

Our oldest is a Sophomore in high school and his younger sister will be a Freshman next fall. We are just four-and-a-half years away from having two adult children go off to college. This is the moment when parents start to see the light at the end of the tunnel. Preparations begin for the empty nest and thoughts turn to the parent’s own desires.

Must be nice.

Meet Graham.

He joined our family just over three years ago. At the time of his arrival, his brother was thirteen and his sister was eleven. They could pick up after themselves, (in theory), and Kendall (11), would make her own dinner if she got tired of waiting. Our life included the normal family chaos, but it was of the manageable variety. My wife and I even had the ability to go to the movies or a nice dinner, by ourselves, on occasion.

Not anymore.

Good bye, date night. Hello, diapers and sleep deprivation. Two children and two parents is perfect for man-to-man defense. Now, we were forced to switch to zone.

Let the juggling commence. Soccer practice had to be balanced with bath time. Naps became as pivotal as the school pick up schedule. Some weeks it felt like the only time I saw my wife was as we high fiveed passing in the hallway. We would lay awake at night, listening to our youngest snore peacefully, and wonder why we were crazy enough to think starting all over was a good idea.

The intent of this story is not to seek sympathy. My wife and I love the wild and crazy ride we call life. Our children are simultaneously amazing and frustrating and we would not trade them for anything, even really good chocolate.

This is a story about unintended consequences.
