Assignment Two: Revise your mentoring plan from last week to include measures to make sure that you do not fall prey to anti-mentorship

I feel like I need to become a leader that leads by example. I feel like I need to become this type of leader because I want to be a neurosurgeon, and I feel that surgeons are very respected in their careers and most people look up to them and listen to what they have to say. I believe that I would need this kind of mentor because it would show me how to become more like them, or even guide me in the right direction to achieve my goals and help me get to where I want to be in life.

One leadership behavior that I feel that I need to cultivate is being organized. I have recently done a few things, like using a planner and taking efficient notes for classes to help me with this issue since I am usually very unorganized. Another leadership behavior that I need to cultivate is taking action. I can start to do this by speaking up in my classes when my professors call on students. Being punctual and on time is also another leadership behavior that I feel that I need to cultivate. I can do this by making sure I set alarms and try to be early to my classes and meetings.

I would want my mentor to guide me. The storytelling method would be a great way that I would like to be mentored. I would also want my mentor to guide or lead me in the right direction by not necessarily instructing or telling exactly what to do in life. I would also like my mentor to lead by example, so my mentor would ideally be a doctor or someone in the medical field that I would be able to look up to. I would also want my mentor to truly help me, instead of trying to help me or saying that they are helping but only doing it for selfish reasons. Another thing that I would like for my mentor to do is to give me constructive criticism. When I make a mistake or do something wrong, I would want my mentor to help me in a way that I would learn from my mistakes and know how to come with a better approach to my goals or a better solution to my problems. — In order to not fall prey into anti-mentorship, I will make sure that my mentor has true intentions of helping me and that they are not just trying to take advantage of me. I plan to do this by making sure that I truly trust my mentor.

To prepare for mentorship, I would have to do a number of things. One thing that I would do to prepare for a mentor is make a list of goals that I would like to achieve so my mentor can help me reach those goals. I can also make a list of things that I have already accomplished, so I can work with my mentor to reach new levels. This method will insure that I am only moving forward and not repeating the same things that I have already done. In order to find a mentor, I will try to look for people in my classes who have achieved most of what I wan to achieve in life. I can also find someone at a job in the medical field who is willing to help me accomplish my goals.

Going back to the first day of class, to be a leader, or to have leadership qualities means to know how to ensure that others, one, have what they need, and, two, become what they need to be. These specific words are bolded because a leader has to know the difference between other’s wants and needs. With this being said, These leaders make sure that all needs are met.

There are five ways to measure your leadership development:

Assignment Two:

Step One — To lead globally means to be able to lead people around the world. The difference between a global leader and every other leader is that global leaders tend to everyone and issues around the world, and other leaders just tend to their small group of people. Our president, Donald Trump, is not a global leader because he lacks the traits of being one. Those traits being, addressing everyone’s needs and being open to change. My understanding of global leadership matches well with Wikipedia’s definition because it pertains to tending to people across the globe. When I think of a global leader, I think of a woman because I believe that woman are powerful and they naturally have the ability to tend to everyone.

Step Two — I think that I would train someone to be a global leader by first teaching them the qualities of a leader and then expanding their horizon. The subjects that they would study are things like psychology because it helps to better your understanding of other people. I think that a global leader can be any age because as long as they possess the traits of a global leader, then they can be one.

Step Three — Cyrus was a very brave person, this is an important trait to have in order to be a global leader because brave people take more rick and more people are likely to know who you are especially if those risks are with good outcomes. Cyrus was also very daring, this is not a necessary trait to be a global leader but leaders who are scared to do things that are daring never get anywhere, they stay in a box and never explore. I think that Xenophon indicates that the Persian educational system trains leaders in general, but these can be the traits of a global leader. I think that Cyrus comes off as more masculine than feminine because he strives to be great at everything that he does and he longs to be noticed.

Step Four — The leadership traits traits that Cyrus exhibits in chapters 3–5 are generally the same as the traits that he has in the beginning of the book such as being firm and having integrity. These are not new traits in my opinion. Cyrus’ education in the media is different from his education in Persian because they have different focuses. A problem of leadership that I have studied is coming up with an idea and putting it into action, this seems to be a trait that Cyrus can easily overcome. A problem that Cyrus may have to face later is his career is over enforcing an idea since he has to power to do so if he pleases.

The leadership behavior that I have performed better this week is managing failure, I recently received a bad grade for a quiz in my chemistry class and in order to manage this, I just learned from my mistakes and I know what I have to do in order to get a better grade for the next quiz.

I have tried to cultivate self-regulation, but this did not work out for me because I have yet to stick to or find a daily routine that does not require me to miss out on sleep.

A leadership behavior that I want to improve in the future is networking with others to form partnerships because, while I am a junior, this is my first year at Howard, so I have networked very little. I think that this is important because I will need to know people for life after Howard to get to where I want to be.

Lily:

The leadership behavior Lily is trying to manage this week is communicating. She says that she struggles to properly communicate her thoughts and feelings with others. She wants to be able to share her ideas and her issues without holding back. Lily is doing better at making decisions,which is great. She wants to be able to speak up for herself clearly without hesitation.

Imani:

The leadership behavior Imani is trying to manage this week is taking initiative. She tends to wait until someone decides something for her. She says that she wants to be able to act on something or take charge of things independently. Imani does not want to rely on anyone else before she makes a decision. She has been improving at doing what she wants without looking at someone else for approval.
