Night sky darkens and across a crumbling pavement
runs a rivulet of rain: curving the lamp post
and descending the gutter, rippling the concrete channel
toward an iron grated drain.

And the street light flickers with a persistent intermittence
the contorted sputtering glancing a figure on the ground:
and from somewhere beneath her rumpled clothing seeps
an increasing lake of crimson creeping the uneven curb side
in the silence without restrain.

Lank hair floats a puddle and there’s fresh flesh gaping at her side.
A lipstick gash divides her cheek: mascara weeping a silent cry.

And in her hand the knife that killed her
as she slashed her wrists in desperation
escaping the man who raped her
five years previous: her
bleeding innocence
his brief
‘Goodbye’.
