About my love of running and finding inspiration in ordinary people

I used to hate running. At school, we had to run 3.2 km (8 tours exactly on the running track) in 20 minutes as part of our sport assessment and I used to get a stitch in the side all the time. It was a painful experience. One of my friend has always been a keen runner and seemed to get a lot out of it. One day, years later, encouraged by my friend, I decided to give it another go. I only run for 15 minutes on the track and miraculously I did not get any stitch. I felt so good after running that I did it again, again and again. I am not a hardcore runner and I’ve never done any long distance run ( 10km is the longest distance I ever run) but I do enjoy taking part in races as I find the competitive side of it very stimulating. The feeling I get from running, even running short distances, is incredible.

Sarah running her 56th parkrun and her 1st parkrun after finishing her chemo

Sarah has breast cancer. I feel particulary drawn to her story because cancer touches so many people around me. In spite of her illness Sarah kept running and being active throughout her cancer treatement, which helped her not only physically but mentally. Just going out and go runnning is a great performance in itself. She has now done 15 parkruns, two 10k races and a 5-mile race since being diagnosed and she is preparing for her first marathon in 2018. Well done Sarah! This is truly inspiring! I hope her story will inspire and encourage more people to get out there and keep active.
