Exploring the Minitua of Truly Building an Experience

I am notorious for not scoping my projects thoroughly enough. It’s something I became aware of recently that I’ve been trying to really become better at. I’m too eager to say something will be quick…

The Life of Film Production

Working in production can be very rewarding if you are up for the challenge of working in all types of conditions and for very long periods of time. A normal work day consists of being on set for twelve hours, but it can go much longer than that if there are any setbacks. When I was working on the show Street Outlaws I worked forty hours in two days. This is on the extreme end of working in production, but nonetheless it can happen.

There are many different jobs associated with production, and they can range across nearly every field, even ones you might not think have a place. I have worked as an Art Director, Camera Operator, Best Boy, Media Manager, Producer, Sound Engineer and Video Editor just to name a few; there’s more trust me, but I just wanted to give you an example of the vastness of it all. These are just the more well known jobs as well.

I first became interested in working in production back in 2010. I started learning everything I could about video editing and the software that was used in the process. Later in the year I started my own company and began making promotional videos and tutorials. I held that job until about 2015 before moving on. In the beginning of 2017 I began working as a video editor for a production company while simultaneously working as a freelance film contractor on films, televisions series and commercials. I did that for the entire year of 2017 and unfortunately had to quit due to health reasons.

My primary area of focus on these projects was a sound engineer. My focus was on making sure that our talent were properly mic’d up and mixing the sound into a mixer. I loved doing it and I was great at it. A project isn’t worth anything if there isn’t any audio to go with it. I would record ambient audio and dialogue from talent as most of my responsibilities. The thing that I liked most about my time working in production was the ability to contribute to a cohesive team and watch magic happen right in front of my eyes.

Working in this industry taught me that working can actually be fun. I’ve held jobs in the past, but I always became disinterested very quickly because I never really felt a challenge anywhere. I have always gravitated towards jobs that offer the greatest challenge because that is the type of job that provides me the most satisfaction. In the case of editing videos, I have to best figure out what order to put footage in to come up with the best possible product. It is a lot of fun!

Working in production has led me to working with big names such as Discovery, Brother International, Dodge, Microsoft, FedEx and Spike TV. If you are up for the challenge of long days and harsh weather conditions in exchange for rewarding opportunities and networking then production may just be the job for you. Plus you get free food at work! What’s not to love?
