The Getting Started Problem.

Obstacles to Content Creation Success and How to Overcome Them

To be successful at content creation, you need to do two things: you need to get started and you need to keep going. Interestingly enough, there are exactly two reasons why hundreds of thousands of people fail at content creation. Millions of potential content creation success stories reach a premature conclusion, only because someone didn’t get started or someone couldn’t keep going. In this article, I’m going to tackle these two issues, what I call the ‘Getting Started Problem’ and the ‘Keep Going Problem.’

The Enemy of Getting Started Is Perfectionism.

Perfectionism is not a compliment. Perfectionism does not mean ‘perfect.’ It means being scared of getting started. No matter how good a product is, no matter how good the content is, in the eye of a perfectionist, it’s not good enough. The perfectionist is afraid of putting out there what he has, and the fear has nothing to do with the quality of the product. If a perfectionist created the latest iPhone, he would not put it out there. And guess what? Millions of people are buying those iPhones today because the product is good. But the perfectionist would be too scared to put it out there.

Mentally positioning ‘perfectionism’ as ‘being afraid,’ makes one understand that this is something he or she needs to overcome. This is not something that’s just a part of you.

When you’re getting started with content creation, you want to start where you can produce content effortlessly. And I ask people the following questions:

And this is exactly where people get it wrong. People will try to make content for what they see is already popping. For example, if Fortnite is all the rage, and a content creator is getting started, they look at Fortnite. And they think, ‘Oh, that’s where the audience is, so I’m gonna build a Fortnite channel.’ But they don’t care about Fortnite at…
