The Owl in the Closet

A Scary Trip

We were driving along a deserted two lane road on a moonless night. The snow mixed with sleet pelted the windshield making it difficult to see. My daughter Sue was driving, usually nothing fazes her, but these hazardous conditions were a challenge!

There was no white line painted down the middle of the road leaving us with no guidance on where we were in the road.. Trees were dense on both sides, which caused snow laden branches to brush up against the car. The sound was eerie and downright scary.

Sue was concentrating on keeping the car on the road. I was deep in thought, wondering how long the drive would be at 20 miles an hour, when something out of the darkness slammed with a thud into the drivers side window. Sue pulled the car to a slow stop and inspected the window, it wasn’t broken.

Sue put the car in drive again, moved forward only to pull off only to turn around. Now I’m really scared. “What are you doing, I asked her?” I’m Just going to take a look at what hit the window. Beams on high Sue slowly drove until she spotted something laying in the road. She stopped, opened the car door, and put her foot out.

The wind was howling and blowing snow through the open door, covering the driver’s seat. My heart was beating fast as Sue stepped out of the car. I hollered at her, Are you crazy, you don’t know what hit the window! Maybe it’s injured and will attack you.” Sue disappeared into the darkness as I attempted to reason with her again, “You could get struck by a car you know…if there are any.

Thinking Back

It was just an hour ago when Sue met me at the Burlington International Airport. I had been visiting my sister Ellen in Florida. The temperature during my two weeks stay there was in the 80’s. Ellen and I spent every day by the swimming pool. We were often in the pool for relief from the heat of the day.

Vermont

After landing and retrieving my luggage we left the warmth of the terminal. We stepped outside to have the wind, snow, and sleet slap us in our faces. It had a rude awakening. I

was no longer in Florida and had landed in Vermont…In the middle of winter!
